Franklin Parish – A Sicily Island man died yesterday and another was charged with vehicular homicide after a two vehicle crash on US 425.

On May 9, 2017, just before 4:30 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop F responded to a two vehicle crash on US Highway 425 just south of Winnsboro. The preliminary investigation revealed a 2002 Cadillac Escalade driven by 27 year old Derrick Daniels of Wisner was traveling north on US Hwy 425. The Cadillac traveled off the left side of the road, overcorrected and traveled back across both travel lanes. The Cadillac drove into the northbound lane of travel and struck a 1998 Honda motorcycle driven by 50 year old Jerry Williamson of Sicily Island. After impact, the Cadillac traveled off the road and began to overturn, and the motorcycle traveled off the road where both the driver and passenger were ejected.

Williamson, who was wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Franklin Parish Coroner’s Office. A passenger on the motorcycle, who was also wearing a helmet, was ejected and received serious injuries.

At the time of the crash Daniels was determined to be impaired. Daniels was airlifted to a local hospital and was charged with vehicular homicide, first degree vehicular negligent injury, possession of marijuana, distribution of schedule IV drugs and careless operation.

Toxicology samples were obtained and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation.

In 2017, Troop F has investigated 14 fatal crashes resulting in 14 deaths.
